Event Details

Join us as we kick off Greenwich Reads Together with an important conversation about network news production with two veterans of the industry.

Former NBC Today Show producer, Susan LaSalla will join former Today Show Executive Producer Jim Bell, the current president of NBC Olympics Production and Programming in a discussion about the evolving role of news.

One of the hottest topics today is how quickly news influences public opinion and politics – from television to print, to online outlets and social media.

In an interesting parallel, the dissemination of news plays a vital role as a plot device in the 2017 Greenwich Reads Together book, News of the World.  At the heart of the novel is an elderly former soldier who makes a living traveling among the far-flung outposts of Texas sharing the “news of the world” with frontier towns hungry for information.

The contrast with today’s lightening fast twitter-verse could not be starker.

Susan LaSalla retired from NBC News in 2009 after a 43 year career.  Her last 13 years were as the Washington Senior Producer for TODAY. Susan has covered every Presidential campaign, both parties’ national conventions, and inaugurations from 1976 to 2009. She was the White House Producer for the first two years of the Clinton Administration. In addition, she covered the invasions of Grenada, Panama, and both Gulf wars. Susan also served as the NBC News Bureau Chief in Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Upon retirement, she was awarded a two-year Fellowship at the U.S. State Department in the office of the Chief of Protocol.
Jim Bell was promoted to President, NBC Olympics Production & Programming in January 2017 after having has worked on every Olympics since the 1992 Barcelona Games. Bell also spent seven years (2005-12) as Executive Producer of TODAY.  He lives in Greenwich with his family.
