Iraq: Creation of Colonialism

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Greenwich Library
Meeting Room

Event Details

This talk will include how the British formed the entity known as Iraq out of Mesopotamia.  It will also include the Balfour Declaration; Damascus Protocol; McMahon-Hussein Correspondence; the infamous Sykes-Picot Agreement; Treaty of Sevres; the Turkish War of Independence and finally, the Treaty of Lausanne, July 24, 1923. Surprisingly, Turkey was not supposed to exist. The British, French, Greeks and Italians carved it up.  Kemal Ataturk led the uprising which would evict the interlopers.

Handouts, complete with maps, will enable those who attend to geographically follow the narrative.  And again, what transpires here is just another aspect of a war we have not been able to separate ourselves from . . . World War I.
